“For this exhibition, I’ve created three embroidered head garments worn by the oppressive dominant male figures. They were created using transparent bridal tulle, diamantes and pearls. I’m interested in the notion of fusion, in this instance, between bridal embroidery and hoods related to dominating male figures.
Like the act of wearing makeup for transformation, I see embroidery as a cultural art form from drawn from my heritage but also my sub-cultural queer identity. It has been part of my practice since making my first headdress for drag because I couldn’t afford a decent wig.” – Liam Benson
